What is sexual violence?
Sexual violence is a form of violence more often directed at women. It is defined as ˇ§any sexual act, attempt to obtain a sexual act, unwanted sexual comments or advances, or acts to traffic, or otherwise directed, against a personˇ¦s sexuality using coercion, by any person regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, including but not limited to home and work.ˇ¨ Sexual violence can happen anywhere. Acts of sexual violence are not only used to fulfill oneˇ¦s sexual desire, it can also be used as a tool by somebody to control and manipulate another person. Sexual violence does not limit only to rape and indecent assault, but also include non-bodily contact as it also brings fear, humiliation and harm to the victim.
Sexual violence includes:
Physical contact: such as rape; indecent assault and unwelcome body touch.
Non-physical contact: such as peeping; indecent exposure and gazing (of a sexual nature).
Verbal: such as obscene language; demeaning remarks made about the body/or body parts. (of a sexual nature)
Any of the above sexual acts are intolerable, and it may appear in marital, dating and other relationships..
