Sexual violence is a form of violence more often directed at women. It is defined as “any sexual act, attempt to obtain a sexual act, unwanted sexual comments or advances, or acts to traffic, or otherwise directed, against a person’s sexuality using coercion, by any person regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, including but not limited to home and work.” Sexual violence can happen anywhere. Acts of sexual violence are not only used to fulfill one’s sexual desire, it can also be used as a tool by somebody to control and manipulate another person. Sexual violence does not limit only to rape and indecent assault, but also include non-bodily contact as it also brings fear, humiliation and harm to the victim. Sexual violence includes: Physical contact: such as rape; indecent assault and unwelcome body touch. Non-physical contact: such as peeping; indecent exposure and gazing (of a sexual nature). Verbal: such as obscene language; demeaning remarks made about the body/or body parts.
